Top 10 Highlights from 2023

It’s been a year full of meaningful projects, fabulous people, and memorable events. As 2023 comes to a close, let’s look back with a BNKC Top 10!

Yay for New People!

2023 was yet another year of growth at BNKC. The following fantastic people (couldn’t be more true!) joined our (already amazing) team in 2023.

Judy Gervais, our accounting and finance manager, officially joined BNKC in 2022 but started with us full time at the beginning of 2023.

Yvette Jancso, project manager, joined us in January 2023 and was quickly promoted to Associate earlier this year.

Théo Van Vugt, intern architect, came to us in chilly February and quickly made the office a warmer place!

Zheren Zheng, junior architectural staff, joined us in July and is already immersed in several of our projects.

Sara D’Amato is the newest addition to the BNKC team, joining us as an intern architect in August.

Serra House Achieves Substantial Completion.

Completed this past summer, Serra House fosters fraternity and community living for seminarians. The project seamlessly integrates a modern infill building with a heritage home, to provide student housing and space for study and prayer.

The design merges old and new, facilitating fluid circulation between buildings which provide spacious private rooms, naturally lit communal lounges, a gym, library, and communal terraces, creating a cohesive and community-oriented facility.    Photo Credit: Michael Muraz

Milestones.

This summer we celebrated some very special anniversary milestones for our team: David Cloutier, 30-YEARS with BNKC!!!!! Wai Fung Chan, 10-YEARS! Chelsea Campbell, Sajith Sabanadesan, Myriam Altamiranda, and Mehreen Mujib, 5-YEARS. Congratulations!

Topping Out at East City and Clockwork.

Two projects, currently under construction, have topped out this year. East City Condos in Peterborough is nearing completion, and Clockwork at Upper Joshua Creek in Oakville has reached full height in one of its two buildings.

A Campus of Caring.

NinetySeven Victoria in Kitchener broke ground this summer. The transformative project combines 44 units of supportive housing, mental health and addiction support, and community food programs within an adaptive reuse initiative.

The project includes a renovation and one-storey addition to an existing warehouse.

Growing Our Leadership.

Earlier this year, we shared that Vaughn Miller (L) has joined Elie Newman and Jonathan King (R) as principal and partner with BNKC. Vaughn will lead design conversations and continue to oversee projects, mentor design teams, and contribute to the firm’s strategic vision.

Party Time!

You know the mantra… Work Hard, Play Hard. We try our best to make memories. And we have a dedicated Social Committee to plan team events. Here’s a few of our favs from the past year. Also, we are hiring!

Large Scale Impact

BNKC has been providing Urban Design services for more than 50 years and these days we’re working on several large master plans for new communities. These projects will eventually provide housing for tens-of-thousands and will develop over the next decades. Here’s a sneak peek….

Richvale Village in Richmond Hill was designed with specific character districts.

A public boulevard is activatd with a mix of retail and residential.

Pedestrian and cycling pathways weave throughout the site.

A new master plan for a community in Markham is comprised of 11 buildings with more than 2,000 suites.

Dogs!

On any given day we’ve got a furry friend (or two) keeping us company at the studio. Everyone gets along and all take their jobs very seriously; be it mooching treats, giving snuggles, or fostering general happiness.

Poppy milking a lil boo boo.
Lola commuting by subway.
Leo is ready to help!
Soda waiting to grow into her paws.

You!

We wouldn’t get to do what we do without YOU! From our longtime clients, to those we’ve just crossed paths with this year – we love collaborating with our community! And, if we’ve not yet met… let’s change that this year!

From all of us at BNKC, have a restful holiday surrounded by those most important to you, and best wishes for a peaceful 2024.
