At the heart of Calgary’s West District master-planned community, the West District YMCA + Calgary Public Library creates a vibrant hub for health, learning, and connection. Designed by BNKC, the facility anchors the next phase of the West District development—linking the eight-acre Radio Park with a network of landscaped courtyards, residential buildings, and local shops along Broadcast Avenue.
The two-storey, 69,000 sq ft complex houses a full aquatic centre, gymnasium, running track, conditioning areas, and multi-purpose studios, alongside a light-filled public library. The design centers on a central atrium that visually connects the pools, gym, and reading areas, creating an intuitive and welcoming experience. Expansive glazing and views to Radio Park integrate indoor activity with the surrounding public realm.
BNKC’s architectural and urban design services encompass land use redesignation, schematic design, and development permit coordination. The project embodies a public-private partnership between YMCA Calgary, Calgary Public Library, and Truman Developments, demonstrating how civic amenities can be meaningfully embedded within a dense, mixed-use urban fabric to foster wellness, accessibility, and lifelong learning.
