Momentous Milestones: Bogdan Newman Caranci Celebrates Fifty Years and Rebrands as BNKC

The architecture and urban design practice reflects on fifty years of creating places, as founding partner Joseph Bogdan and longstanding principal Angelo Caranci retire from practice, and with partner Elie Newman announcing a change in company name to officially welcome Jonathan King to the partnership.

After fifty years of creating places with a worldview, Joseph Bogdan and Angelo Caranci have announced plans for retirement, leaving in their place a globally recognized, award-winning architecture and urban design practice, led by Elie Newman and Jonathan King. To celebrate the golden milestone, the architecture and urban design firm, formerly Bogdan Newman Caranci Inc. (BNC Architects), unveils plans for a new name: BNKC Architecture + Urban Design.

Based in Toronto with a global portfolio, the design practice spearheaded the award-winning College Park Redevelopment in Toronto (1989), Old Hyde Park Village in Florida (1984), The Commons of Uptown Waterloo in Waterloo (ongoing), the Brantford West Gwillimbury Library and Cultural Centre (2012) and the transformation of the Bishop Strachan Junior School (2004) & Senior School (2017) in Toronto. Its portfolio includes many other celebrated institutional, heritage, mixed-use, residential, commercial buildings, urban design projects, and master plans across Canada and around the world.

“Joseph and Angelo’s sense of collaboration and business acumen has established the legacy upon which the company’s future as an integrated architecture practice will prosper,” says Elie Newman, principal at BNKC. “Jonathan’s expertise in design, firm management and experience with mass timber positions the firm well in contemporary architecture to continue to lead and innovate.”

“It’s a tremendous honour to call BNKC my home and to support the core elements that continue to be the bedrock of the practice: our responsive approach to clients; attention to detail; and tenacious focus on getting it right,” comments Jonathan King. “It is also about embracing innovation and sustainability in a meaningful way.”

To reflect on the past, retiring partners Joseph Bogdan and Angelo Caranci are available for interviews, and current partners Elie Newman and Jonathan King are able to speak to what lies ahead. Learn more about the firm’s diverse portfolio at on Instagram, Twitter & LinkedIn.
